Oral Literacy Outline
Prior to writing the final draft of my Oral Literacy, I decided to create an outline. I wanted to actually work "hard" on this assignment. I was very proud of the outline; however, I didn't incorporate everything I wanted to.
Outline
Name: David Flaherty
General Purpose: To explore history/influence of music.
Specific Purpose: To explore two songs (Mariah Carey and Stacy Barthe) and their impact on my growth as an individual.
Thesis: Through the two songs, “Don’t Forget About Us,” and “Flawed Beautiful Creatures,” music is represented as healing.
Introduction
Greeting and Name: Good morning, my name is David Flaherty.
Attention Getter: “I used to pretend to pass out to keep from going to school where I was always teased. But music was the one thing people liked me for,” according to Stacy Barthe, singer and songwriter, in a Billboard interview.
Credibility Statement: And…this is exactly what music has done for people, including me. Music is healing. It allows someone to express him/herself holistically. I’ve retreated to music for comfort and sympathy through my painful and (even) happy times. This is what music does for me.
WIIFM: Understanding music’s impact on my life will open your eyes to the beauty around you. You will find solitude in rhythm and voice.
TOC: So, today, I will focus on two songs that have resonated with different parts of my life.
Mariah Carey’s song, “Don’t Forget About Us”
Stacy Barthe’s song, “Flawed Beautiful Creatures”
(Transition: Now, let me move on to my first song of choice, “Don’t Forget About Us”)
Body
1st Point: Mariah Carey’s song, “Don’t Forget About Us”
Mariah Carey: Singer/songwriter, best-selling female artist, etc)
Mariah Carey’s lyrics are extremely relatable. Her songs are about love, experience, pain, and relationships. Everyone relates to that in some way- whether it’s about your parents or a spouse.
Breakup with ex-girlfriend- Jessica
Jessica and I dated for two years- We would always listen to Mariah Carey together (more me than her); however, this song really related to my situation when she and I broke up.
Made me feel comforted. Allowed me to gain confidence in a time of vulnerability.
(Transition: Therefore, through Mariah Carey’s lyrics for “Don’t Forget About Us,” I felt comforted during my time of tragedy. Now, let me move onto my second song that has resonated with me).
2nd Point: Stacy Barthe’s song, “Flawed Beautiful Creatures”
Stacy Barthe- Singer, songwriter, method artist, and mentor. 1
Famous for writing lyrics for Miley Cyrus, Rhianna, etc. Famous for her songs in “Being Mary Jane,” a BET television show. She is a method artist- writes her feelings, experiences, visions, goals, etc.
During my process of finding myself
Her lyrics, “sometimes we’re insecure, sometimes we’re fragile” are so true! Sometimes, we truly are fragile and insecure and easy to coerce. We all have moments.
My transition from boyhood to adulthood with an ongoing amount of responsibilities- stressful! We all make mistakes in life. It’s okay. Nobody is perfect. Perfection is a myth.
(Transition: Ultimately, Stacy Barthe and Mariah Carey and instilled insight within me and broadened my perspective not only on my issues but also on other issues).
Conclusion
Restate Thesis: Music is ultimately healing through the lyrics, sounds, and vibes.
Summary: Mariah Carey and Stacy Barthe wrote two thoughtful, helpful, and inspiring songs that guided me on my journey.
Memorable Thought: Music is a place of stillness. It allows one to come together and overcome his or her problems. Music, ultimately, feeds the soul!
Thank you! Any questions?
